What to Bring with You to the Dealership

Most people think the car buying and leasing experience is an all day affair, but it can take as little as 90 minutes if you come prepared and have a good idea of what you want out of a vehicle.

According to data collected by the J.D. Power U.S. Sales Satisfaction Index, the average car sale took around 3.6 hours in 2017. This is because most people do not come prepared with all of the documents they need. When going to a dealership with the intent to buy or lease always bring your down payment, which can be in the form of a personal check, cashier’s check, cash, or credit card. These options vary from each dealership, so be sure to call ahead to make sure you come with an acceptable form of payment. You will also need your driver’s license as a form of identity verification to go along with your payment. Also, you will obviously need it if you intend to drive the vehicle in any capacity.

If you plan to trade in a vehicle, it is wise to bring the vehicle you intend to trade along with its title. This is absolutely needed with trade-ins because it verifies that you are the owner of that vehicle. If the vehicle was co-signed, be sure to get the co-signers signature before you head to the dealership to cut down on some time.  You will also need to bring the car’s registration, which must be current, and some form of proof of insurance. Also, regarding insurance, you can youll your provider before you go to the dealership to set up a new policy if you are very certain you will be leaving with a new vehicle. This will save TONS of time.

The most obvious way to cut down the time that you are at the dealership is to know exactly what car you are looking for. This can be done by searching the dealerships online inventory and using filters to find exactly what you need. Once you have decided on a car, call the dealership and set up an appointment with a sales rep so that they have the car ready for you to look at or test drive right when you get there. After that, having all your documents listed above, the process should not take more than an hour and a half!
