Loudon Motors Ford Reviews the 2019 Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer has been in production since 1990 and is one of the most recognizable SUVs in the United States. The 2019 model keeps the same generational look that was introduced on the 2016 model, but is equipped with more bells and whistles than ever.

The 2019 Ford Explorer comes in base, XLT, Limited, Sport and Platinum trim levels. Each level has its own strengths, but the choice of trim is completely up to you and based on your lifestyle. For example, if you have a large family that you will be hauling around, the XLT is probably the best for you because of the great safety features and the storage. If you are looking for an SUV with a little more zip, you will definitely want to go with the Sport trim, as it is regarded as one of the true sport SUVs on the market boasting a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s start with the base model. At this trim, you will enjoy the lower price and some great upgrades to the Explorer. Features that come standard on the 2019 Explorer are 18-inch wheels, a power-adjustable driver's seat, a rearview camera, a 4.2-inch central display, bluetooth, a USB port and Ford's Sync voice command system. In terms of power, the SUV runs on a non-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine, but a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is offered at an extra cost.

The XLT builds on the base, but comes with a few more features. At this trim, you will see additions such as power-adjustable front passenger and driver seats, satellite radio and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. When buying the XLT, you will have the option between two packages. The Driver Connect package includes an 8-inch central touchscreen with the Sync 3 interface, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, as well as extra USB ports. The other option, which can be added onto the Driver Connect package, is the Ford Safe and Smart package which comes equipped with blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist and automatic wipers. You can pick one or the other, or have both!

Going up the levels, we have the Limited. This trim will give you all the features included in the XLT's Driver Connect package, along with leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, premium audio and power-folding third-row seats. As for the engine, it comes standard with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but have the option to get the V6 if you would like.

The Sport trim does not include all of the comfort additions that the Limites has, but makes up for it with a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 standard with the vehicle, accompanied by firmer suspension tuning and a towing package. This trim is perfect for work or play.

The highest level, the Platinum, you will get to enjoy the Ford Safe and Smart package, a panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable pedals, an automated parking system, premium leather upholstery, a premium audio system and all of the features offered on the Limited trim. You will also get the turbocharged V6 paired to the softer suspension of non-Sport models with the Limited trim.
